Italian cuisine has a huge variety of dishes and drinks: because Italy was not officially unified until 1861, and its cuisines reflect the cultural variety of its regions and its diverse history (with influences from Greek, Roman, Gaelic, Germanic, Goth, Norman, Lombard, Frank, Turkish, Hebrew, Slavic, Arabic and Chinese cuisines). Italian cuisine is savored in every corner of the world.

In a way, there is really no such thing as Italian cuisine in the way that people usually understand national cuisines. Each region has its own specialties. Italian cuisine is not only highly regionalized, it is also very seasonal. The high priority placed on the use of fresh, seasonal produce distinguishes the Italian cuisine from imitations available in most other countries.

Regional differences
Roman cuisine, for instance, uses a lot of pecorino (cheese made from sheeps milk) and offal, while Tuscan cuisine includes white beans, meat, and bread. Pizza making also varies throughout the country, the pizza crusts in Rome are thin and crispy, while Neapolitan pizza and Sicilian pizza have a thicker crust. The influence of Northern Italian cuisine can be seen in French and German cuisines. Piedmont and Lombardy each grow their own different kinds of rice, which are used to make risotto. The North of Italy is the home of polenta. Emilia-Romagna is known for lasagna and tortellini (stuffed pasta), Naples (Napoli) is the home of pizza, mozzarella cheese and pastries. Calabria's cuisine uses a lot of hot pepper in its renowned salami (which is common, in several varieties, throughout the country) and uses capsicum. Sicily is the home of ice cream but its cuisine also has many influences from Arab cuisine (lemon, pistachio) and also includes fish (tuna, swordfish). Sardinia is famous for lamb and pecorino.

Northern and Southern Italian cooking
Traditional Italian cuisine varies from region to region and does not follow North-South tendencies. Northern and southern Italian cuisines can be differentiated, primarily, by the north using more butters and creams and the south more tomato and olive oil. Generally, however, there is a strong difference between the regional use of cooking fat and traditional style of pasta. Inland northern and northeastern regions usually prefer more butter, cream, polenta, mascarpone, grana padano, and parmigian cheeses, risotto, lasagna and fresh egg pasta. Coastal northern and central regions are more of a link between north and south and often use tortellini, ravioli and are known for great prosciutto. The southern regions are known for mozzarella, caciocavallo, and pecorino cheeses, olive oil, and dried pasta. Southern Italian cuisine also uses the ubiquitous tomato.

Types of Italian coffee
Italian coffee (caff), also known as espresso, which is a strong coffee prepared by forcing the hot water through finely ground coffee beans at high pressure. It is usually served in relatively small amount. Caff macchiato is covered with a bit of steamed milk or whip cream; caff ristretto is made with less water, and is stronger. Cappuccino is mixed or topped with steamed, mostly foamy, milk. It is generally considered a morning drink. Caffelatte is usually equal parts of espresso and steamed milk, like caf au lait, and is typically served in a large cup. Latte macchiato (spotted milk) is a glass of warm milk with a bit of coffee.

Italian wines
We cannot talk about Italian food without talking about Italian wine. Most Italian wines of great names are produced in the three main Italian regions: Piedmont (Barolo), Venetia (Amarone, Pinot Grigio, etc.) and Tuscany (Chianti, Brunello). Other great wine producing regions such as Puglie (Primitivo) and Sicily also produce some noteworthy wines.

Traditional Menu
A traditional Italian meal:
1. Antipasto - hot or cold appetizers
2. Primo ("first course"), usually consists of a hot dish like pasta, risotto, gnocchi, polenta or soup. There are usually many vegetarian options.
3. Secondo ("second course"), the main dish, usually fish or meat (pasta is never the main course of a meal). Traditionally veal is the most widely used meat, at least in the North, although beef has become more popular since World War II.
4. Contorno ("side dish") may consist of a salad or vegetables. A traditional menu features salad after the main course.
5. Dolce ("dessert")
6. Caff ("coffee") (espresso)
7. Digestive which consists of liquors/liqueurs (grappa, amaro, limoncello) sometimes called ammazzacaff ("Coffee killer")

Although it is said that today the traditional Italian menu is reserved for special events even as the common menu only includes the first and second course, the side dish (often joined to the second course) and coffee (if not in a hurry). One remarkable aspect of an Italian meal, especially if eaten in an Italian home, is that the primo, or first course, is usually the more substantial dish, containing most of the meal's carbohydrates, and will consist of risotto or pasta. Modern Italian cuisine also includes single courses (all-at-once courses), providing carbs and proteins altogether (e.g. pasta and vegetables).

Renting properties and homes is a highly profitable business if the enterprise is properly planned and executed. One thing that every landlord has to and will have to deal with is maintaining the condition of their properties. After - After a renter moves out the name of the game is making sure that there was no damage done to the property and getting it ready for the next tenants. This is a good time to compare the home to the pictures you took before to see if there are any discrepancies. Protecting your investment is an important thing so be sure you are ready to do so if necessary.

Achieve Your Goals Now By Ditching Your Excuses

Recently, I watched 'The Jeremy Kyle Show'. Jeremy is a no nonsense talk show host who tries to sort out the broken relationships of his guests. Many have feeble excuses for their irresponsible behaviour. Jeremy puts them right.

In this episode, he spoke to a father who had separated from his partner and their son. His former partner complained that he had the opportunity to see his son at weekends but seldom took advantage of this opportunity.

One of his excuses was that he was living with friends and had not settled down anywhere since the split. Jeremy pointed out that this was a feeble excuse. He could meet his son at the swimming pool or a caf or just sit on the swings at a local park and chat for two or three hours.

He warned the father that if he did not keep up his relationship with his son he would lose it forever and that would break his heart. He finished by telling him:

"Get off your backside and make it happen!"

Jeremy, before that final comment, had already given the father the extra motivation to make more frequent visits happen. He had warned him of the life time regret that would follow his failure to take action.

Once the father had admitted the laziness and lack of motivation hidden under his excuses about being homeless, he could work on his motivation and think about the pain of a life without his son. He could realize that, though his domestic arrangements were temporarily out of his control, the ability to arrange visits with his son every single weekend was well within his control.

Many of us need to take action and make things happen but laziness and fear can cause us to create one excuse after another as a smokescreen to hide our inner lack of discipline, energy and confidence.

Some excuses are, of course, genuine but far too many are simply lies. If I were to say I have no time to go for a walk or do some weight lifting, I would be lying. I always have time to walk and to lift weights but, on some days, I don't feel like tearing myself away from my fascinating computer.

Some wait for inspiration to appear and motivate them to make a start on whatever goal they are working on. They will have a long wait. Inspiration arrives more often after you start doing something than before you start.

Many of the world's greatest writers just sit down at their desk and start writing whether they are inspired or not. They never use the excuse that they do not feel like writing or were not inspired.

I tell my martial arts students to attend training whether they feel like it or not. Progress will be very slow if they only attend when they feel in the mood. Usually, they feel like training soon after the session has started.

Even if they don't, they will make progress. People who show up regularly move swiftly ahead of those who are still waiting to be inspired!

It has been said that, on the internet, many people make excuses rather than money. They put off the marketing tasks like advertising which are somewhat boring and spend time on the tasks like product creation which are more obviously interesting and creative.

I am one of these. I enjoy writing articles and creating ebooks but I hate marketing. I need to change my attitude and follow the advice of David Vallieres:

"Some people just like to make excuses instead of money. NO PROBLEM... leaves more on the table for us winners. DO something even if it's wrong. Just GET STARTED."

According to David Vallieres, the losers:

"Wait until everyone else around them is making money by working a realistic plan and then call those who do make money "lucky". My opinion: Make your own luck. Work hard, but DO SOMETHING."

David believes that opportunity is often disguised as work!

A favourite excuse for not doing something whether it is marketing or anything else is to say: "I don't know how to do it." The short answer to this is "Learn how to do it!"

You don't need to stop learning just because you have left college. It has never been easier to learn anything. We have millions of books and millions of internet resources which can teach us almost anything we want to know.

I have enough books in my garage alone to last a life time and enough internet courses on DVD in my front room to last several lifetimes.

I didn't know how to set up a website so I phoned a local web designer and asked him to teach me. Since then I have had at least one lesson from him every week for two or three years and am making progress in understanding the latest cutting edge skills in the art of web design.

This is an expensive but effective way of learning. If I could not have afforded lessons, I could have taken free lessons online. There are few genuine excuses.

Once we realize that we are making excuses based on factors outside our control like - no one taught me how to design websites at school - we can take action based on factors which are within our control - like I can choose to pay a tutor to teach me what I want to know now.

If I make the excuse that I don't have enough money to pay for lessons, I can either get free tuition online as I mentioned or I can choose to earn more money. The excuse 'I can't afford it' is another common one and it is usually based on what we hold in our current account rather than on the money we can choose to make.

Once you realize that 'I cannot afford it' is an excuse and that you alone have control over your internal thoughts and actions, you can deal with the problem. I, for example, could earn more money by teaching more martial arts classes or by advertising for more students.

I could even get round to doing the boring internet marketing work that I have neglected. I am sure it won't feel so boring once the money starts pouring in.

If we want something badly enough, we can find ways that we can make the money we need to buy it. If we accept the amount of money we already have as our limit, we will constantly feel unable to buy what we want.

If you don't know how to make some money, you can learn a skill which will allow you to earn some. I tell my martial arts students that they can make a full time or part time living teaching self-defence - a skill which is essential in the modern world.

They need to earn their black belt first and do at least two instructor courses and they are then qualified to start earning back all the money they spent on their training and more. Ditch your excuses and then most things are possible.

I will take a break from writing this article to go for that walk I mentioned earlier! I have just got back. This article has motivated at least one person to ditch his excuses!

Over a year ago, Steve Pavlina, wrote an outstanding article called 'Feeble Excuses'. I am indebted to him for some of the ideas in my own article. Here is one great quote:

"Dont let excuses run your life Its easier to say, I dont know how than it is to say, Im unwilling to learn. But when you admit your unwillingness, laziness, or lack of motivation, then youre finally facing the truth, and from that point youll have the opportunity to grow. For example, if you face your unwillingness to learn, you may decide that even though it would be a lot of work to learn a new skill, you could do it if you wanted it badly enough and really applied yourself."

What, then, can you and I do when we feel the desire to make feeble excuses?

Get off our backsides and make things happen!

We always have time to do what is important so don't say 'I don't have the time'.

Don't wait for the inspiration to do something. Start and inspiration will arrive later.

Do something to make money even if it is wrong. Just get going. You can correct your mistakes later and work out a realistic plan for success. Then work your plan.

If you don't know how to do something, learn how to do it.

If you cannot afford something, earn enough money to buy it. If necessary learn a skill which will help you to earn the money.

Realise what is under your control and what isn't. Most life changing stuff is in your own mind and under your own control. Improve what you can control and don't use what you can't as material for your excuses.

I will finish with an inspiring quote from the author, Alan Cohen:

"There are two kinds of people in the world: those who make excuses and those who get results. An excuse person will find any excuse for why a job was not done, and a results person will find any reason why it can be done. Be a creator, not a reactor."

Receiving cash for your military pension can provide access to more of your money to meet your immediate financial needs. Instead of waiting to receive monthly pension payments, you can exchange your military retirement for a large lump sum. You could spend the money on anything: debts, a new car or house, a business venture, your child's college education, or even a much-needed vacation.

The good news is you don't have to repay the money because it's not a loan. And, you don't have to sell your entire pension; you can sell part of your payments. You can receive cash for your military pension payments for a select time, plus retain any future increases in payments. Then once the specified time passes, you can continue receiving your full retirement payment, as you did prior to the sale.

Keep in mind that military and non-military pensions can easily be converted into a lump sum of cash, but it's a very expensive process. For example, discount rates for regular pension payments run 20 percent for assignable pensions and 30 percent for non-assignable ones. Therefore, you should only sell your pension if there are no other options available to you.

Consider this: As an active-duty military member retiring after 20 years of service, you will receive retirement pay for the rest of your life. The payout, which is based on your years of service and rank, could be substantial. For example: veterans retiring after 20 years of service in 2006 as an E-8 a usual rank for retiring non-commissioned officers would get 50 percent of their base pay or $2,035 per month. Over the next 30 years, these retirement payments could add up to more than $730,000.

Eligibility for Receiving Cash for Your Military Pension You may be eligible to receive cash for your military pension if it meets federal guidelines concerning Veterans Administration disability. If you're a veteran whose military income comes solely from VA, you cannot sell your payments. However, you can get cash for your payments if the VA Disability portion makes up no more then 40 percent of your total military income. This restriction is part of a federal legislation (HR 2297) that is designed as a protective measure to prohibit pensioners from selling their V.A. pension streams.

Besides the disability issue, pension fund purchasers use a variety of other factors to determine eligibility. While requirements vary among purchasers, they typically require you to:

- Presently be receiving a minimum monthly pension payment of $400 dollars after taxes

- Have credit scores of at least 580 from all three credit bureaus: TransUnion, Experian and Equifax

- Be currently employed or have a secondary income that allows you to meet your monthly expenses without your pension payments

In addition, some pension purchasers require life insurance. Generally, any active insurance policy is acceptable, even if it existed prior to the sale of your military pension. Also, there's generally no age limitation placed on pensioners making the sale. But, ultimately, underwriters will evaluate each submission on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility.

Steps to Getting Cash for a Military Pension Receiving cash for a military pension is a relatively straightforward procedure. Most pension fund purchasers provide free, no obligation quotes. And most don't charge any up-front fees. Here are some general steps to the process of getting cash for your military pension:

Step 1: First, you provide information about how much you receive each month from your military pension and any deductions for taxes, child support, alimony, etc. You also must indicate who is making the payments to you (DFAS, GE, IBM, State of Florida, etc.) and when you receive those payments. (You'll need a copy of your most recent Retiree Account Statement or VA Award Letter, or VSI Earnings Statement.)

Step 2: Next, the underwriter determines the total amount you would receive from your pension for the number of years you wish to sell. Let's say you want to "cash in" the next eight years of your military pension. If you're an E-8 receiving $2,035 a month, then you would receive $195,360 over the next eight years.

Step 3: Then, if approved, a lump sum would be calculated for your offer. You could expect an offer of around $98,000 for your eight years of non-assignable pension payments. (The 30-percent discount rate works out to only about half the original payment due to the lower future value of dollars).

Step 4: The entire process takes from four to eight weeks to complete.

If you are a non profit organization, the chance will be higher of receiving a grant. However, most new businesses are probably looking for profit. So how do you find money to start your business?

As mentioned, earning a grant is extremely difficult. Two clear situations have grant possibilities. First, if an individual has a very clear purpose deserving of a grant, it is possible to receive one. Second, but also along the same terms, you may be able to receive a grant if you are doing particular research with an outcome that benefits a government agency.

The Small Business Association (SBA) does not typically help owners find a grant. They can however be a great resource. If you access the SBA Web site you can find topics to help you with your business. The SBA also offers loans for your business that vary from small to larger amounts. Use the Web to gather loan information, ask questions and locate someone near your area to assist you. If a loan via the SBA is not possible, research several bank opportunities. Until I read this three-dimensional biography of the American writer who taught the modernists how to write, I thought I knew all I wanted to know about Ernest Hemingway. Its all in his literature; its all in the press and the archives, I thought. But I did not find the man I thought I knew in this biography by James Mellow. Eureka! Biographer James Mellow is as much an artist of life history as the artists he writes about.

For Hemingway buffs, A Life Without Consequences is the most enlightening portrait arguably of the most influential writer of the twentieth century. Much of what we already know about the man is documented ad nauseam. That he was and is universally disliked by some, adored and imitated by others can be found in letters to and from him, his four wives, publishers, editors and friends; not to mention his countless critics, the maligning bastards he likens to the hyenas of his Africa novels.

To understand this complex man who took his own life, the expatriate behind the legendheroic war correspondent, newspaper man, big-game hunter, hard drinking, womanizing, openly bigoted, deeply romantic, envious of peers, foul-mouthed winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Print Journalism and the Nobel Prize for Literatureyou have to read this book. The extraordinary legacy he left of where he came from, what life did to him and why he did what he did with his life, pulsates in the real characters, places and events of this epic that reads better than a novel.

Born into an upper middle class late 19th century Victorian family in Chicagos fashionable Oak Park suburb, the Hemingway that Mellow reveals may or may not have been greatly influenced by his musically talented mother Grace and his physician father Clarence. We do know that most of his work is autobiographical; and that his family, boyhood and adult friends and enemies are the basis for the characters in his stories, and that his father, brother and a granddaughter committed suicide.

The woodsy hunting and fishing scenes of his childhood, his first encounters with girls and sex, are wonderful glimpses into a simpler time. His tragic wartime experiences appear in the Nick Adams stories and in later novels. Everything he did as Ernest Hemingway is in his fiction. And of course so are Paris, Spain, Cuba, Key West and life and death. Old photos show the boy Hemingway dressed as a girl, which was common then. In maturity, Hemingway overcompensates for manliness by demonizing homosexuality. He exaggerates masculinity by womanizing and in engaging in love affairs while happily married. Mellow includes photos of Hemingways family and the people he knew before, during and after two world wars, including his celebrated wives.

Hemingway belongs to the less is more class of literary noir that found its way to Hollywoods money machine. Joining writers like Dashiell Hammett (The Maltese Falcon) and Raymond Chandler (The Big Sleep), Hemingways The Killers and To Have And Have Not are the classic hard-boiled noir genre of a man who allowed no interruptions, no intrusions into his writing life. He worked from dawn to noon, and was drunk the rest of the day. His characteristic brevity, with plenty of air space between hard-hitting dialogue, finds its way into his novels. By asking the reader to question, to contemplate what the characters might be thinking but not saying, Hemingway is engaging the imagination. With some exceptions, I think this is why most motion picture screenplays are not as successful as the original books.

The famous post-Stalinist Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko (now in his eighties) admired Hemingway. As a young man Yevtushenko wrote a poem about his chance encounter with the old man in a Copenhagen airport caf/bar.

The old man moves with grim victorious determination the earth seemed to bend beneath him, so heavily did he tread upon it. Rejecting a Vermouth and Pernod with a resounding No he is served Russian Vodka, clearly more to his liking.

Everything in Hemingways life is bigger than life until Papa can no longer tolerate the myth he has cultivated and the expectations he has of himself. His body physically ailing from war wounds and accidents, his mental abilities fading, what else is left for Ernest Hemingway than to blow his brains out?

The Portfolio Diet: The Solution to Heart Disease

What if there was a combination of foods that were as effective at lowering LDL cholesterol as prescription drugs? Would it be worth adding some new foods to what you eat each day to avoid medication?

This is what the latest in a series of research studies Dr. Jenkins from the University of Toronto shows. Studies have previously shown that various foods, such as nuts, soy protein, oat bran, and plant sterols all can have a cholesterol-lowering effect. But what if you combined all these foods together? Dr. Jenkins latest research shows that combining all these foods together is as effective as taking a statin drug. The results showed a 30.9% decrease in LDL cholesterol from the statin and a decrease of 28.2% from the portfolio combination of all these foods.

Dr. Jenkins is calling this a dietary portfolio, but its becoming known as The Portfolio Diet. The concept is to add all of these foods, in a type of portfolio plan, like investments, to cover all possibilities for better heart health. This is not a weight loss diet, however, although the concepts for weight loss and lowered cholesterol could certainly be combined, with proper education and guidance by a qualified nutrition expert.

What is the Portfolio Diet?

Just follow these guidelines:

1.Substitute soy foods for meat. Drink soy milk instead of milk and substitute soy protein foods for other meats.

2.Eat as much sticky fiber as possible. People in the study took three daily servings of natural psyllium supplements. Oats and barley replace other grains and preferred vegetables include eggplant and okra.

3.Include plant sterol-enriched margarines, such as benecol and Take Control. Plant sterols are also available in capsule form as dietary supplements.

4.A handful of nuts every day. In the study, almonds were eaten and the Almond Board of California offers portfolio diet recipes on its website (look at recipes on http://www.almondboard.com/), but any tree nut will reduce cholesterol.

Here are some examples of a typical day:

Breakfast Include soy milk, oat bran cereal with chopped fruit and almonds, oatmeal bread with sterol-enriched margarine, and some jam.

Lunch Soy lunchmeats, oat bran bread, bean soup, fruit.

Dinner Stir fry with vegetables, tofu, fruit and almonds.

Snacks Include nuts, yogurt, and soy milk thickened with a psyllium supplement such as Metamucil.

Has this diet shown to be effective?

Jenkins et al were curious how this diet would work in the real world, so they signed people up who said they wanted to lower their cholesterol levels. They told them what to eat and gave them sample menus -- but they didn't provide any prepared foods.

Dr. Jenkins said that about 30% of the people had a 20% reduction in their LDL cholesterol levels after six months. Another 30% had a 15% reduction in LDL levels, and another third failed to lower their cholesterol levels, believed to be because they were unable to follow the diet as strictly as those with good results. What seemed to be the biggest obstacle for people was eating soy food products. Dr. Jenkins said that most people could eat almonds and substitute plant sterol products for margarine.

Is the diet for you?

Many people are concerned about heart disease and stroke, especially if they are struggling with weight control and high blood cholesterol levels. However, many people are not comfortable going on prescription medications. Since this is an eating plan that does not eliminate food groups or follow some type of fad, there is no risk to going on this diet. In fact, its not really a diet at all, but a way of eating. And no one has to do anything but substitute some of the recommended foods for foods they normally eat today.

So, lets say you would like to try the diet, but, like many other Americans, are concerned about adding soy foods to your diet. You have never eaten them and dont even know where to find them! Well, they are actually in your favorite supermarket already! It may be time to experiment, though, because not everyone is going to like all the soy foods that are available. Soy milk. There are multiple brands and different fat levels. You can buy whole fat, low fat and non fat. You can buy regular (no flavoring), or any number of flavors. I have personally found one brand that I like over others and you may have to experiment to find one you like, as well.

Edemame. These are frozen whole soybeans that are harvested when still green. They can be found in most health food stores, such as Trader Joes or Whole Foods Market, in the frozen food section, usually next to the lima beans. These can be found shelled or in the shell. You can add them to soups or stews or eat them by themselves. I like to eat them as my protein for breakfast.

Tofu. Also known as bean curd, tofu is a soft, cheese-like food made my curdling soymilk. The curds are then pressed into a solid block. There are different levels of firmness; silken, soft and firm. Silken is a creamy, custard-like product that works well with pureed or blended dishes. Soft tofu is best used in recipes that call for blended tofu, or in soups. The firm tofu is more dense and solid and holds up well in stir fry dishes, even on the grill. The firm tofu is higher in protein, fat and calcium than the other forms, but since this is a plant fat, this should not be an issue. Textured Vegetable (or Soy) Protein Products. This is the soyfood product that many soy burgers and other meat substitute products contain. The best way to determine if these foods are for you are to experiment with a few options.

Miso. Miso is a rich, salty paste condiment that characterizes the essence of Japanese cooking. Traditionally, miso is made by combining with a grain, salt, and a mold culture and then aged in cedar vats for one to three years. Readers may recognize the name because this is a popular soup.

Soy nuts. Soy nuts are whole soybeans that have been soaked then baked. They can be found in snack isles and manufacturers now include soynuts in any number of coatings, including chocolate.

Tempeh. This is a traditional Indonesian food that is most commonly found in Asian stores. It is a chunky, tender soybean cake. It can be marinated and grilled or added to soups, casseroles, or even chili.

It can be very easy for some people to add nuts to their diet. In fact, it may be harder to not add too MANY nuts! It may also be doable to add more sticky fiber to your diet, also, with a little planning. However, it may be a greater challenge to find soy foods that can be enjoyably substituted for meats you are used to eating. However, if your health depends on it, and you refuse medications, this may be a great thing to try, especially since there are no risks involved with adding these foods to your diet. Just remember that these are foods to be substituted, not added, to the diet. Since calories do also still count, adding extras to your current diet could result in weight gain, leading to new concerns.

Where did the Dreamer go?

Last year I had a phone call from a guy that I had gone school with but had not seen for twenty plus years. He had heard me on the radio and decided to make contact.

As he talked I struggled to recall exactly who he was. Don't you hate that when someone talks to you like they're a long lost buddy and your like.. "who the hell are you?"

Anyway, he kept chatting and it eventually dawned on me who he was. We hadn't been best friends but we were in the same year and hung out occasionally. I remembered him as being a creative, dreamer with an amazing imagination who could draw beautifully and write incredible stories. A good guy. Kinda cool.

He was always talking about all the amazing 'stuff' he was going to do when he left school and all his grand plans to write and illustrate his own series of books. In class he would write and draw his own comic books and us kids would sit around and read them while we were meant to be doing something far more academic.

Compared to me, he was kind of eccentric but I always marvelled at his great ideas and plans, and the clarity he had about his future. While I was struggling to lose my fat identity he was dreaming his dreams and preparing himself for the opportunity to turn his passion into a business, or at the very least, a career. I remember him winning awards at school for his art and our English teacher encouraging him to study literature at university.

We spoke for only a minute or two on the phone and arranged to meet for a coffee and chat the next day.

As I was driving to meet with him I wondered what the seventeen year-old optimistic dreamer with the long bohemian hair looked like a quarter of a century later. I wondered if I'd recognise him. The first thing I noticed as he walked towards me in the cafe was his lack of hair. His head, once home to a long, flowing mane now resembled a barren wasteland.

I must of been staring because his first line was, "not what it used to be, is it?"

"Er, no...aah, er... you look great."

'Gee that was smooth', I thought.

I lied; he looked tired, old and totally un-inspired. Different.

He sat down and we started to chat. I was excited to learn about the books he'd written and his career as an artist and writer. It didn't occur to me that he could have done anything else.

"So, how many books have you written?" (he laughs). "Let's see, including my most recent one....none!" "Really?" "Yep."

I didn't know what to say. I didn't want to offend him.

"Wow, if there's one person that I was sure I knew where they'd end up, it was you."

"What happened?"

"Life happened, my wife happened, kids happened, bills happened, divorce happened, stress happened."

"And here I am; simple really."

"So what do you do now", I asked.

"I sell cars."

"Oh, great."

"It's not great; it's crap."

"Oh."

For about half an hour we had some incidental, almost-meaningless dialogue but the seventeen year-old dreamer with a sparkle in his eyes, excitement in his voice, dreams in his mind and hope in his heart, had well and truly gone.

I felt sad for him. He was so talented. What a waste.

"Where's the seventeen year-old creative dreamer gone", I asked him. "He got his dreams and creativity beaten out of him by life." "They got replaced by reality."

While he wasn't really bitter, he was 'defeated'. His dreams and plans were ancient history to him. It was like the years had sucked the creativity energy out of him.

"So why don't you write your book?" "I'm forty-two." "So?"

"Man, I have three kids, I sell cars and I own less than half of my house."

"Don't tell me about your life situation, tell me about what's in your heart?"

"Waddya mean?"

"If your life situation was different, would you like to write?"

"Of course."

"So write... even though it's not different - yet."

"Who for?"

"Initially, for you."

"And then hopefully, for everyone else."

I told him that I write professionally. He was shocked. "Really." "Yep, and I have less talent than you!"

I had an idea.

"Why don't you start writing your book, I'll read your drafts, give you some feedback and when you're done, if you and I think it's good enough...I'll do my best to get you a meeting with a publisher."

"Really?" "Yep."

Sixty minutes after we met, we stood to our feet to say goodbye. He gave me a hug that lasted just a little too long and I detected a glimmer of hope.

Excitement maybe.

The seventeen year-old creative was coming back to life. The dreamer was waking up.

One week later I received an email with a thirty thousand word document attached; the first three chapters of his book.

It was good. Real good.

I rang him. He was a different person. "You were right Craig; I needed to write for me." "I feel amazing."

That was six months ago. The car salesman has now finished the fifth (and almost final) draft of his first fantasy novel. It's nearly 200,000 words!

The dreamer is dreaming again and hope has returned.

Bay Window Curtains

To answer the nagging question that so many bay window owners have, namely "How do I treat a bay window?" let's first take a look at what a bay window is and what that means to you the homeowner. A bay window is a recessed window with angled sections. So in essence it is like one large window, with two smaller angled windows on either side. For many, especially those with an outstanding view and with privacy and light control this should not be a concern because it is a great window to leave uncovered. Unfortunately most bay windows do not have fabulous views and plenty of privacy. Most bay windows require window treatments such as bay window curtains.

Each bay window is going to have a unique set of circumstances that will dictate what type of bay window curtain or treatment should be used. So, let's take a look at a few of these:

If your bay window has unique features, or maybe features handsome window frames, etc. consider playing them up with individual, inside-mounted cafe curtains, shades, or blinds. Roman shades with contrast banding are tailored and traditional.

For closely spaced windows, try a simple set of shades or blinds, and add a continuous valance or a series of shallow swags. If you can plan carefully, your bay window curtains will look lovely whether your blinds are up or down. If you should use a valance, plan so the top treatment conceals the under treatments when they're raised.

For many bay windows, you will want to use rod-pocket curtains or curtains on rings. If you have rod-pocket curtains and curtains on rings you should know that they may require a hinged, flexible, or custom-bent rod to fit your window properly.

If your bay windows are not closely spaced, and if there is enough space in between, hang a stationary panel between windows and at each outer window. For a bay window with little space between windows, flank the entire window area with a pair of panels and top the treatment with a cornice. This will give you the best looking results for whatever bay window you have.

Despite the stigma, finding the perfect window curtains for covering the bay windows in your home is easier than you think. You do not have to spend a whole lot of money to get bay window curtains that fit your needs. Affordable bay window curtains are available in various solid colors, print fabrics, and also in a huge selection of materials. You are not limited to one or two choices. You can also skip bay window curtains altogether and simply treat your bay windows with blinds and a window topper such as a valance or cornice. When it comes to bay window curtains you can choose from a variety of styles including...
